Mayor Doug Findlater has recently told the public that although he supports the district's parks acquisition program and thinks it is a good idea, he said the program is not a top priority.
The program is not the priority of taxpayers, and not enough people support the funding of the program to make it viable any time soon.
As recently as two years ago, West Kelowna was a rural area governed by the Regional District of Central Okanagan. Then they incorporated its 30,000 residents into its own municipality.
The city still partners with the regional district to funnel a portion of its property taxes to the district. The citizens do not want to contribute to the Park Legacy Reserve Fund.
The mayor says funds are needed for a new sewer system to be installed in over 1,500 houses, along with an upgrade to the main system. The park acquisition project cannot be the main focus of the city for the time being. There are other, more important projects that need funding.
